Albrechtsburg Castle, Meissen Cathedral, and a Taste of Saxony

Some places make history feel immediate. Albrechtsburg Castle and Meissen Cathedral are two of them. Perched above the Elbe River, they form one of Saxony’s most impressive landmarks, combining dramatic architecture, centuries of political history, and sweeping views over Meißen and the surrounding countryside.

As we climbed toward the fortified complex, it was easy to see why this hill was chosen. Its height offered both protection and visibility, overlooking the river and the town below—advantages that have made the site important for more than a thousand years.

In 929, King Henry I ordered a fortress built here, helping establish Meißen as a political and administrative center. Over time, the hill became the heart of a fortified complex reflecting the power of the rulers who controlled the region.

Albrechtsburg is especially remarkable because it was not built simply as a defensive fortress. Construction began in the late fifteenth century under Ernest and Albert of Saxony, who envisioned a grand residence that would display their status and authority. Its tall towers, elegant staircases, vaulted rooms, and late Gothic design give it an imposing yet refined, almost palatial character.

Next to it stands Meissen Cathedral, whose twin towers define the hilltop skyline. Its Gothic architecture contrasts beautifully with the castle, while the two buildings form a harmonious historic ensemble. Inside, soaring spaces and detailed stonework offer a quieter, more contemplative experience.

Of course, no sightseeing day is complete without a café stop. Fortunately, there was one at the top, giving us the perfect excuse to pause and enjoy the view. I was once again “forced” to experience the local culture through pastry—a responsibility I accepted enthusiastically.

Overlooking a picturesque town and river from the castle wall, the view invites a journey back in time while sipping coffee under the expansive sky.

This time, the regional specialty was Eierschecke, a traditional Saxon cake. Light, airy, and gently sweet, it has soft, custard-like layers topped with powdered sugar. Paired with a café latte and views across Meißen and the Elbe, it was the ideal conclusion to our visit.
