Plan Ahead for Disney Christmas: What You Need to Know

6 min read

Have you ever dreamed of spending Christmas surrounded by twinkling lights, beautiful Christmas trees, your favorite Disney characters, and a little extra pixie dust? If so, Walt Disney World during the holidays needs to be on your bucket list!

There is something truly special about Disney at Christmas. From the moment you walk down Main Street, U.S.A., and see the giant Christmas tree to the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the parks and resorts, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped right into a Christmas story.

But here’s something important: A Disney Christmas vacation takes a little extra planning!

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year at Walt Disney World. With a little planning and some helpful tips, you can make the most of your trip and spend less time worrying about the details.

Let’s talk about everything you need to know before planning your magical Disney Christmas vacation!

 1. Book Your Disney Vacation Early

If you’re thinking about visiting Disney during Christmas, don’t wait until the last minute to book!

The weeks around Christmas and New Year’s are some of the busiest times of the year. Disney resort hotels can fill up quickly, and popular room types may become harder to find.

I recommend booking your resort and vacation dates as early as possible. Booking early gives you more choices when it comes to resorts, room types, and vacation dates.

My tip: If your schedule allows, consider visiting in early December instead of Christmas week. You can still enjoy the beautiful decorations, holiday entertainment, and festive atmosphere, often with more manageable crowds.

 2. Know What to Expect with Christmas Crowds

Let’s be honest. Christmas at Disney is popular for a reason!

Families from all over the world come to celebrate the holidays at the Most Magical Place on Earth. This means you should expect larger crowds, longer wait times, and busy walkways, especially during Christmas week and the days leading up to New Year’s Day.

But don’t let that scare you away!

With a good plan, you can still enjoy your favorite attractions, see the holiday shows, meet characters, and make wonderful family memories.

Here are a few ways to make your park days easier:

  • Arrive at the parks early to enjoy popular attractions before the crowds build.

  • Take advantage of Lightning Lane passes when they make sense for your family.

  • Plan a few must-do attractions instead of trying to do everything.

  • Take a break during the busiest part of the day.

  • Be flexible and enjoy the little surprises along the way!

Remember, you don’t have to do everything to have a magical Disney vacation!

 3. Don’t Miss the Christmas Decorations!

One of my favorite things about Disney during the holidays is how beautiful everything looks!

Each park has its own holiday decorations, music, and special touches. Even the Disney resorts get dressed up for Christmas!

Here are a few things you won’t want to miss:

Magic Kingdom: Walk down Main Street, U.S.A., and take in the beautiful Christmas tree, holiday decorations, and festive music. It’s the perfect place for a family Christmas picture!

EPCOT: Enjoy the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays, where you can explore holiday traditions from around the world, enjoy seasonal food, and experience special entertainment.

Hollywood Studios: Take in the holiday decorations and festive atmosphere throughout the park. Keep an eye out for special seasonal entertainment, too!

Animal Kingdom: Enjoy the beautiful holiday touches throughout the park, including the festive decorations in Discovery Island and the adorable Merry Menagerie.

Disney Resorts: Don’t forget to visit some of the Disney resorts! Many feature beautiful Christmas trees and incredible decorations. Exploring the resorts is a fun way to enjoy even more Disney magic without spending a park day.

 4. Consider a Special Christmas Party

Want to add even more holiday magic to your vacation?

Disney offers special holiday events that can make your trip extra memorable!

Two popular events include:

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

This special-ticketed event takes place on select nights at Magic Kingdom. Guests can enjoy festive entertainment, holiday treats, special character appearances, and a magical Christmas parade.

Disney Jollywood Nights

Held on select nights at Hollywood Studios, this holiday event offers a different kind of Christmas celebration with entertainment, seasonal treats, and plenty of festive fun.

These events require separate tickets and are not included with regular theme park admission. They can also sell out, so plan ahead if you want to attend!

 5. Make Your Dining Reservations Early

One of the best parts of a Disney vacation is the food! And Christmas is a wonderful time to enjoy special treats and festive meals.

Want to enjoy a character dining experience? Hoping to have Christmas dinner at one of Disney’s amazing restaurants? You’ll want to plan ahead!

Disney dining reservations open 60 days before your arrival date.

Guests staying at a Disney Resort hotel can make dining reservations for their entire stay (up to 10 nights) beginning 60 days before check-in.

Some popular restaurants and character dining experiences fill up quickly, especially during the holidays.

My advice? Make a list of your must-try restaurants before your reservation window opens. That way, you’ll be ready to grab those reservations!

And don’t forget to leave a little room for all the yummy Christmas snacks!

 6. Learn About Lightning Lane Passes

If you’re visiting Disney during one of its busiest seasons, Lightning Lane passes may be worth considering.

These passes allow you to select shorter queues for certain attractions instead of waiting in the regular standby line.

Here is when you can purchase them:

  • Guests staying at eligible Disney Resort hotels can purchase Lightning Lane passes 7 days before check-in.

  • Guests staying off property can purchase them 3 days before their park visit.

You can choose experiences and arrival windows through the My Disney Experience app.

Because Christmas crowds can mean longer waits, having a plan for your favorite attractions can help you make the most of your park days.

 7. Get Familiar with the My Disney Experience App

If you haven’t already downloaded the My Disney Experience app, now is the time!

This app is your best friend when visiting Walt Disney World. You can use it to:

  • Check attraction wait times.

  • View park maps.

  • Make dining reservations.

  • Purchase and manage Lightning Lane passes.

  • Mobile order food.

  • Check showtimes and entertainment.

  • View your vacation plans.

I recommend downloading the app before your trip and spending a little time getting familiar with it. You’ll be glad you did!

 8. Pack for Florida Weather

Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean you’ll need a heavy winter coat every day!

Florida weather in December can be unpredictable. Some days are warm and sunny, while others can be chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings.

My packing recommendations include:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (your feet will thank you!).

  • Light jackets or sweatshirts.

  • Layers that you can add or remove throughout the day.

  • A few warmer outfits just in case.

  • Ponchos or rain jackets.

  • A small backpack for park essentials.

And don’t forget those festive Christmas outfits! Matching family shirts, Mickey ears, and holiday accessories make for some adorable vacation pictures.

 9. Don’t Forget to Slow Down and Enjoy the Magic

This might be my most important tip!

It’s easy to get caught up in planning every attraction, show, meal, and character meet-and-greet. But some of the best Disney memories happen when you slow down and enjoy the moment.

Take time to admire the Christmas decorations. Enjoy a holiday treat. Listen to the Christmas music. Watch your children’s faces light up when they see Mickey and Minnie dressed for the holidays.

And make time to enjoy the little things!

Disney at Christmas isn’t just about riding attractions. It’s about spending time together, making memories, and experiencing a little extra magic during one of the most special times of the year.

Is Christmas at Disney Worth It?

Absolutely!

Yes, the crowds can be larger. Yes, you’ll need to plan ahead. And yes, it may take a little extra patience.

But seeing Cinderella Castle sparkle, walking through a snow-covered Main Street, enjoying the holiday music, and watching your family’s excitement is something truly special.

There is nothing quite like celebrating Christmas at Walt Disney World!
