Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Trip to Disney 🎢✨

Planning a Disney vacation is magical… but also a little overwhelming. Between apps, reservations, Lightning Lanes, snacks, and the sheer excitement of being there, it’s easy to feel like you need a second brain just to manage your day. If I could hop in a time machine and give my first-timer self a pep talk, these are the 10 things I’d absolutely share. Consider this your friendly shortcut to a smoother, smarter, more joyful Disney trip.
1. The app will be your best friend
The My Disney Experience app is basically your vacation command center. You’ll use it constantly—checking wait times, mobile ordering food, finding your next attraction, and snapping photos/videos. The key? Don’t let your phone die. Bring a portable charger (ideally a solar or high-capacity one) because the app-heavy lifestyle is real.
2. Genie+ is confusing at first… but worth it
Genie+ feels like learning a new board game while everyone else already knows the rules. But once you start using it in the parks, it clicks. You’ll save time, reduce stress, and feel like you’ve unlocked a hidden Disney strategy level. If your budget allows it, give yourself permission to embrace it.
3. Kindness to Cast Members goes a long way
Disney Cast Members are truly the heart of the experience. Being polite and patient isn’t just the right thing to do—it can lead to unexpectedly magical moments. We had several situations where a kind explanation or friendly ask helped us find solutions (and yes, sometimes even an extra bit of pixie dust). Bonus tip: leave a positive review and mention names when you can.
4. Rope drop is a game-changer
Want shorter waits and cooler temps? Get there early. Rope dropping lets you knock out a top-tier ride before lines explode. This strategy helped us avoid long waits for the biggest attractions and saved our Lightning Lane choices for later.
5. Park hopping isn’t always worth it
This surprised us. Park hopping sounds amazing in theory, but in practice, it can chew up time and energy. If you’re trying to experience as many rides as possible, sticking to one park per day can be the better play. We bought park hopper for a five-day trip and only used it once.
6. Schedule a rest day
Your feet aren’t made of magic. A mid-trip rest day can save your mood, energy, and patience. On our last visit we did three park days, one rest day, then two park days, and it helped a lot. Next time? We’d happily add another rest day.
7. Disney details are next-level
Disney doesn’t just create experiences—they choreograph moments. One of my favorite memories was watching a Cast Member sweep leaves… into a Mickey shape. That’s the kind of small, delightful detail that reminds you you’re somewhere special.
8. Meals and snacks are bigger than you think
Portions can be generous, so consider sharing meals—especially if you’re sampling snacks throughout the day. We split a lot of food and stayed happy (and less stuffed).
9. Water is free
This is such an easy money saver. Ask for free cups of ice water at quick-service locations. Bring a refillable bottle and skip the constant purchase of bottled water.
10. Get the celebration button
First trip? Birthday? Anniversary? They probably have a button for it. Wear it proudly. It’s fun, it’s free, and it can spark sweet interactions throughout the day.
Final thought
Disney is the kind of place where planning ahead pays off—but so does leaving room for wonder. Use the tools, pace yourself, be kind, and let the magic find you in the small moments. Your first trip doesn’t need to be perfect to be unforgettable—but these tips can make it feel a whole lot easier…and a lot more magical.
