From the moment I arrived in Amsterdam to the final morning onboard, the Avalon Waterways Tulips in Bloom cruise delivered a consistently high-value, well-orchestrated travel experience. This itinerary is designed around one of the most visually stunning seasons in Europe, but what makes it stand out is not just the scenery, it’s the seamless execution, thoughtful inclusions, and the quality of the ship and excursions.

Arrival and First Impressions
Upon exiting baggage claim, an Avalon representative was waiting exactly as instructed, friendly, organized, and immediately attentive. After confirming my name, I was escorted to a central meeting area where arriving passengers from multiple flights were gathered. Within a short time, we boarded a coach and made the approximately one-hour transfer to the ship.

This level of coordination is worth noting. Transfers, often overlooked in travel planning, were fully included and professionally managed. Whether ocean or river cruising, ports are rarely next door to airports, and Avalon handled this logistical piece flawlessly.
The Ship Experience: Comfort Meets Functionality
Sailing on the Avalon Panorama changed my long-held opinion about cabin importance. I’ve always said “the room doesn’t matter,” but the panoramic, wall-to-wall

window suite proved otherwise. Waking up each morning to natural light and passing landscapes redefined the onboard experience. It wasn’t just a room, it became part of the destination.
The onboard atmosphere felt slightly younger and more active compared to other river cruises I’ve experienced. While not a scientific observation, there were noticeably fewer mobility challenges among guests, and Avalon’s approach to excursions reflected that balance, active options alongside “gentle walker” tours ensured accessibility for all.
Dining and Inclusiveness: A Major Differentiator
Avalon excels in its dining model. Each meal offered multiple options, with enough variety to satisfy different preferences without overwhelming the guest.

Flex Dining added another layer of convenience, allowing guests to align meals with their schedules rather than rigid dining times. Additionally, complimentary beverages during meals and a daily happy hour reinforced the all-inclusive value proposition.
By the end of the trip, this value became crystal clear: my final onboard bill was $0. Outside of one optional excursion and a couple of coffees ashore, everything, from meals to drinks to transfers, was included. When comparing river cruises to ocean cruises, it’s critical to evaluate total trip cost, not just the upfront fare. Avalon delivers strong value when viewed through that lens.
Excursions: Where Avalon Truly Shines
The excursions were a highlight throughout the journey. Avalon’s operational model emphasizes smaller groups and more guides, which creates a noticeably more personal experience. While some operators run large groups with minimal staffing, Avalon often deployed multiple guides for the same number of guests—details that significantly improve the experience.

From the historic streets of Nijmegen, the country’s oldest city with Roman roots, to the layered history of Maastricht, each stop blended storytelling with exploration. Walking through Maastricht’s ancient streets while seeing a centuries-old water wheel still in operation reinforced how history in Europe isn’t preserved—it’s still functional.
In Antwerp, the mix of global trade history, art, and architecture added depth to the itinerary. The visit to Fort Eben-Emael provided a powerful historical counterpoint, illustrating the rapid evolution of warfare during World War II.
The itinerary also delivered iconic Dutch experiences, including the UNESCO-listed Kinderdijk and the vibrant tulip displays at Keukenhof. Beyond the beauty, learning that tulips are primarily grown for their bulbs—not just the flowers—added an economic and cultural dimension to the experience.

Logistics and Minor Drawbacks
No trip is without trade-offs. A late change in docking location placed the ship in a less walkable area at one point in the itinerary. While disappointing, Avalon mitigated this with organized transportation, ensuring minimal disruption to the guest experience.
Final Assessment: Exceptional Value and Execution
Avalon Waterways delivers a polished, high-value product that aligns closely with what travelers expect from a premium, all-inclusive river cruise. The combination of thoughtful inclusions, high-quality excursions, efficient logistics, and an outstanding ship design creates a compelling overall package.
This cruise reinforced my confidence not just in Avalon, but in the broader Globus family of brands. For travelers evaluating river cruising options, this itinerary demonstrates that value is not about the lowest price, it’s about what is truly included, and how well the experience is delivered.
Bottom line: Avalon’s Tulips in Bloom is not just a scenic journey, it’s a strategically designed, guest-focused travel experience that consistently delivers on its promise of quality, convenience, and value.
