When it comes to long-haul air travel, not all seats are created equal—but not everyone is flying at the very front of the plane either. The very front of the plane is reserved fr what United Airline class “Polaris” and is the most expensive real estate n the plane.

Most travelers find themselves choosing between economy, economy plus, and premium plus. All three fall below business and first class, where fully lie-flat seats, luxury service, and price tags ranging from $4,000–$8,000 for the experience. For many, that level of spend simply isn’t practical.
So the real question becomes: how much better is the experience as you move up from economy to premium plus—and is it worth it?
Understanding the Baseline: Economy vs. Economy Plus
Standard economy is exactly what most travelers expect: functional, efficient, and designed to move a large number of passengers from point A to point B. Seats are tighter, legroom is limited, and amenities are basic. You’ll get your meal, a small personal screen, and not much more.
Economy plus, however, introduces the first meaningful upgrade—space. Typically located toward the front of the economy cabin, these seats offer extra legroom, making a noticeable difference, especially on international flights. What economy plus does not significantly change is the overall experience. The seat width, food service, and amenities remain largely the same as standard economy. Think of it as a comfort buffer rather than a true upgrade.
Enter Premium Plus: A Different Category of Comfort
Premium plus is where the experience begins to shift from “getting through the flight” to actually enjoying parts of it.
What are the differences and similarities between economy, economy plus, and premium plus?
Firstly, all of these categories mentioned are still “below” first class and business class. On average a first class cross world trip ranges from 4000-8000 dollars. And it is truly “first class”. Linen, lay flat seats and amazing comfort. Many people who fly first class claim the airplane trip before they arrive is an integral part of their trip. It is more than just the food and the treatment you receive from the staff it is all about arriving well rested and ready to take on the day. I would love to try business class on a trip but I am not sure I could ever afford the cost of first class nor do I feel it would be a worth while expenditure of my limited funds.
So. First impressions of the premium seating and the experience is that it is more of a Premium experience then I expected. More room between seats, more arm room and several added amenities.

The headphones are over the ear instead of the in-ear ones.

The blanket is softer and warmer.

They even provided an amenity kit with sleep mask, socks hand cream, lip balm, and some additional items.

The food service was tasty and filling. I did not pre order any meal and my choice was what was left. Fortunately the option was tasty and filling. There were two meal servings and several snack options that kept you noshing the entire trip.

The seat in premium plus is wider and provides more reclining angle then the standard seats in the economy section. The seat itself is more comfortable and provides more room. Although you are still usually sitting next to another passenger I did not feel squeezed or squished.
Now. The real question, is the additional comfort and space worth the additional cost? In my case I was able to upgrade using points and the answer is for me 100% yes. At what cost is the additional comfort and space worth it? Each person will have to determine that for themselves. I can say I feel I less stressed and a bit more rested upon my arrival allowing me to start my adventure feeling better and less stressed then if I had been seated in the economy section.
