If you’re thinking about trying a river cruise, the Viking Gullveig is a great place to start. An 8-day cruise from Regensburg, Germany to Budapest, it is proving relaxing and scenic trip with just the right mix of comfort, culture, and calm. Viking is known as one of the pioneers of river cruising, and after being onboard, it’s easy to see why they’ve earned their reputation. T
The Route: A Snapshot
The cruise starts in Regensburg, a charming German town full of medieval history, and ends in the stunning city of Budapest. Along the way, we will visit several picturesque towns and cities along the Danube, with daily included excursions that give me a chance to explore the local culture, history, and food.
A Warm Welcome Onboard
From the moment we stepped onboard, the staff made us feel welcome. Whether it was the captain or the crew taking care of the rooms, everyone clearly took pride in their work. That thoughtful attitude made the whole experience more personal and enjoyable.
Stateroom: Small But Smart
The standard stateroom is smaller than what I’ve had on other ships, but that doesn’t mean it felt cramped. Everything is well-organized. The bed was okay—not the softest mattress I’ve had, but totally fine for sleeping after a full day of exploring.

The room comes with a 42” flat-screen TV (though it doesn’t have satellite TV). You can use it to check your onboard account, book excursions, or watch Viking’s own channel. There’s a mini-fridge, a safe, and plenty of drawers and closet space. We unpacked completely and tucked our suitcases out of sight. The bathroom is small but very functional, with a smart layout and good water pressure in the shower.
Public Areas: Comfortable & Calm
The ship has some great shared spaces. The Observation Lounge offers panoramic views, perfect for relaxing with a drink or watching the world float by. The top deck has a shuffleboard court and a walking track. It’s a peaceful place to sit and watch the sunrise or unwind after dinner.

On the second level is the main lounge and the only bar on the ship. Nearby is a 24-hour coffee station and a small morning buffet before the full breakfast is served. There's also a cozy library and a few computer stations if you need them.

Wellness & Entertainment: Low-Key and Lovely
If you like peace and quiet on your vacations, you’ll appreciate that there’s no spa onboard—meaning no one is trying to upsell you a pricey massage every day. Instead, Viking offers optional lectures and cooking demos that help you learn about the places you’re visiting. These were fun, informative, and a nice way to spend the afternoon if you didn’t feel like napping or reading.
The Aquavit Terrace, an outdoor dining area, is perfect for meals with a view. On warm days, breakfast or dinner here felt extra special.

Tech & Connectivity
Wi-Fi is included in the cruise price. It’s not super fast, but it works well enough for checking emails, sending messages, or scrolling through social media.
Each room is also equipped with USB ports and both American and European electrical outlets, so you’ll have no trouble charging your devices. Viking also provides QuietVox headsets for use during shore excursions so you can hear your guide clearly without needing to huddle close.
Final Thoughts
The Viking Gullveig offers a calm, enriching way to explore Europe. The service is excellent, the ship is thoughtfully designed, and the included excursions make travel stress-free. This cruise is ideal for mature, curious travelers who enjoy learning about history and culture—without giving up comfort or great food.
Whether you’re relaxing on the top deck, enjoying an open-air dinner, or learning about the next port in a casual onboard talk, this cruise strikes the right balance of leisure and learning. If that sounds like your kind of vacation, Viking is absolutely worth considering.
